Your exact role title. Please enter your job title.
Please enter the company name.
The person you are addressing the letter to. First name or full name. Please enter your manager's name.
Defaults to today.
Check your contract. Section 86(2) of the Employment Rights Act 1996 sets the statutory minimum at one week after one month of service. Your contract may require longer.
You are not legally required to give a reason, and the ACAS template does not include one. Selecting an option adds a single short sentence.
The ACAS wording stays exactly the same. Warm adds a line of thanks and a sign-off that keeps the door open. Firm asks your employer to confirm your last day, final pay and P45 in writing.

Resignation email FAQs

Can I resign by email in the UK?

Yes. gov.uk says your contract will tell you whether notice must be in writing, and otherwise you can even do it verbally. An email is in writing, so it works in most cases and gives you a dated record.

What should the subject line of a resignation email say?

Something plain your manager will not miss, such as "Resignation: [Your name], [Job title]". The generator adds it for you.

When does my notice start if I resign by email?

Usually the day after you tell your employer, unless your contract says otherwise. Send it during working hours so there is no doubt about when it arrived. The notice period calculator shows your last day.

Do I need to give a reason for resigning?

No. The ACAS template does not include one. You can add a short reason if you want to.

Should I tell my manager before I send the email?

It is good practice to tell them in person or on a call first, then send the email so there is a written record.
